Design for free-range

Design cities for autonomous kids…

Though I live rural now, my grade school years were spent in a good sized city. Just the other day my sister and I were reminiscing about how “free-range” we were then. Ride my bike to the swimming pool, to the library, to the comic book store…most places no one would let their kids do that now. And in rural Oklahoma everyday I see people walking streets without sidewalks, walking or biking busy highways without shoulders, let alone bike paths–because they have no choice. Its our choice to build roads and human habitats this way. Conceiving how to do better is not hard, why is it so hard to DO better?
